The Roots

Mountain Jam 2012

Hunter, NY

Review By: Pamela Ashton

I’ve seen a lot of shows, but never, have I seen a tighter set than what I witnessed when The Roots hit the stage at Mountain Jam.

I was familiar with the Roots beforehand and had seen them play on Jimmy Fallen, but I was still absolutely FLOORED by what I saw and heard.

They moved flawlessly through their set that included a medley of covers including Guns’n’Roses’ Sweet Child of Mine and George Thorogood’s Bad to the Bone.  The crowd went wild as this unexpected foray into “rock” music, complete with squealing leads that were dripping with feel.  It was amazing!

Captain Kirk Douglas played 2 well-worn Les Pauls, coaxing warm, sweet, tone-rich leads from them.  Playful, talented and diverse, he entertained the audience playing very technical leads offering a little scat, and belting out a few tunes too!!!  Extremely impressive!

Just when I thought that the exceptionally well-contained chaos on stage couldn’t get any better, Damon Bryson a.k.a. Tuba Gooding Jr. danced across the stage while playing the sousaphone.  It wrapped around him like a glittering piece of jewellery and I couldn’t tear my eyes from him.  I’d never seen anything like it.  He was so full of energy, so wildly entertaining.  My eyes didn’t know where to focus!!!

QuestLove drove the set from behind his minimal kit, smiling and grooving with his bandmates the whole set.

If you haven’t had a chance to see The Roots live, put it on your bucket list.  Musical talent, diversity, groove, swing and vibes abound.  No matter what genre of music you love, The Roots will move you…and isn’t that the very reason we go to a live show?!!?

Respect.
