Robben Ford

drew150What a player and what a career!!! I have wanted to sit with Robben since I  heard the first Blue line recordings. Robben is one of those outstanding players who have something so unique that you can recognize that’s it’s him playing after hearing just one note!  He has always blown me away with his phrasing and technique, well blended with tone and a feel not achieved by too many players. It was very refreshing to hear Robben talk about being open to any music exploration, his message was clear: there should really be no single close-minded statement about being Metal or Blues. Open yourself up to soaking it all in. Try to play it all!

Robben is a 5 time Grammy Nominee, 8 Solo Studio recordings, 3 albums with the Blue Line, 4 Live records and far too many collaborations to list .He has played with George Harrison, Miles Davis, Greg Allman, Bonnie Raitt and so many others. Currently working with The Ford Family Blues Band and touring with Larry Carlton he has produced another project with Guitarist Mike Landau, Bassist Jimmy Haslip and Drummer Gary Novak on the project “Renegade Creation” dubbed a “ROCK BAND” it is a bit of a step away from his most recent work and touring schedule with Larry Carlton. Robben is also busy working very hard on his online guitar lesson/community effort the “Robben Ford Guitar Dojo” (INFO: http://www.robbenford.com)

Gear-wise Robben has come full circle back to mostly real vintage using old Tele’s, Les Pauls and ES335 guitars.  He did, in the past, use a signature model Robben Ford Fender Chambered double cutaway and a custom made guitar by Japanese luthier Taku Sakashta called the Noupaul. He is still plugging into his Dumble Overdrive specials whenever possible but some tours require that he use back line where he will usually get an assortment of Fender amps, mainly a Twin.

Great guy, great player, he has covered so much musical ground and it really shows in everything he does, it was a true pleasure to meet another genuine, humble and huge guitar “STAR”.

Thanks

Drew
