Paul Gilbert is a well known guitar player first discovered by Mike Varney’s label, Shrapnel. He rose to fame as the axeman in Mr. Big. When we learned that Paul was going to be in the Netherlands, I immediately arranged an appointment for a tête-à-tête with Paul.
Paul is currently on tour after just having released his last record Vibrato. The record consists of a couple of originals with vocals, some instrumentals and some covers.
I was wondering how he got to these recordings and planned to ask him where he came from and what turned him into the person and player he is now today.
The Paul from today is definitely a different player then the Paul from the RacerX era or even the Mr. Big highlights.
I caught up with Paul in Zoetermeer after having witnessed his sound check with bandmates Kelley Le-Mieux (bass), Thomas Lang (drums) and wife Emi Gilbert (keyboards).
We decided to find an empty dressing room (what was easy because there was no opening band because Paul Gilbert was playing 150 minutes), put on a thick jacket (the room was unused and not heated), took a guitar and a 10 W Marshall.
The interview was very enjoyable and illustrated with colorful noodles…
