Ewan is a guitar wizard. Numerous awards, the acknowledgment of his peers, tours with icons Don Ross and Antoine Dufour, several acclaimed solo recordings and MILLIONS of Youtube video views; perhaps cumulatively more than any other Canadian instrumental guitarist attest to this.
Initially interested in music as a young lad after seeing Raffi, the folk troubadour for children, Ewan was floored by the visual impact and the guitar sounds in the Motley Crue video “Kickstart My Heart”.
Moving on to his first purchased album, Judas Priest’s “Screaming for Vengeance”; Ewan immediately obtained and started to learn electric guitar. Developing an increasing appetite for heavy tunes, he moved on to Megadeth, Cannibal Corpse, Carcass and many many others. The Judas Priest revelation was at about 8 years of age and at that point Ewan started taking lessons and has never looked back!
Ewan started to release self produced records in his twenties starting in 2007, and after placing first at the Canadian Fingerstyle Guitar Championships in 2009, he won a record deal with CandyRat records with whom he has been recording an album a year ever since.
2013 sees Ewan poised to take over the world with two imminent releases: Acoustic Metal, on CandyRat a two CD set, one CD tracks recorded with the intricate rhythms of Slovenian drummer Zack Bevelacqua, the second CD the same tracks, only featuring the solo guitar sound as well as several bonus tracks including a magnificent acoustic rendition of the Jason Becker masterpiece “Higher”.
Interestingly, Ewan is only the second artist Jason has permitted to record this particular song, the first being Canadian shred god Dave Martone who recorded an electric version for the Becker tribute album “Warmth in the Wilderness”.
The second release is an amazing self produced effort called “World Candies”, an album of traditional music featuring pieces from Finland, Latvia, Norway, Bulgaria, Sweden, Italy, Romania, Ireland, Scotland, Poland, Serbia, Germany, Mexico, Turkey, Russia, Macedonia and the USA. On these tracks Ewan is essentially capturing traditional melodies and emulating cultural instruments using only his solo acoustic guitar.
So meet Ewan Dobson, who graciously took time away from his furious schedule of trying to complete these latest works!
