ANNIHILATOR – FEAST (EMI/UDR) 2013
On their 14th release, Ottawa beast, Annihilator, definitely give evidence as to why they are the stuff of Canadian thrash metal legend. Over the 9 tracks featured on FEAST, Annihilator guitar/bass mastermind, Jeff Waters, gives you stacks of his patented machine gun riffage, and plenty of ultra-melodic solos that slither, and strike like a cobra attack, as you might expect, but it’s midway through the CD that the band decide throw a few curveballs to great result.
On the track, “No Surrender,” the band hit you with straight-up RHCP style funk before slamming the gas pedal to the floor, and launching into a full-on stuttering thrash riff from hell. Fellow Canuck, Danko Jones, lands a co-writing credit and lends lead vocals to the track “Wrapped,” and as you can imagine, throws some sleaze into the mix. This results in FEAST’s most accessible “rock” track.
What seems to be most evident on FEAST is the fact that despite being mostly super-thrash, it’s incredibly catchy vocally, and pretty much void of cookie monster vocals. The standout track on FEAST has to be the epic “Fight The World,” with its varied guitar tones, hyper-rhythms, multiple solos, and a badass Waters bass break the velocity of which will have Geddy Lee checking his rear view mirror.
FEAST also offers up the bonus disc, “RE-KILL,” that contains 15 new studio re-recordings from the band’s early catalogue performed by the current Annihilator touring lineup of Waters, guitarist/vocalist, Dave Padden, bassist, Alberto Campuzano, and drummer, Mike Harshaw.
Fear not, Annihilator fans, “Alison Hell,” is included, as well as hammering versions of “Ultra Motion,” “Refresh The Demon,” and the extremely loopy, “Brain Dance.”
FEAST, and its bonus disc , RE-KILL, prove to be alotta thrash for your cash, and come packaged in some great 3D artwork. 14 albums deep into their career and Waters and Co. seem to be showing no signs of slowing down. A great holiday “Feast” for the metal head on your Christmas list.
